The McHatton Home Colony was one of four of Home Colonies set up by the Freedmen's Bureau—an agency of the Federal government with a mission to protect the rights of freed blacks—following Union occupation in Louisiana as a transitionary solution to the changing dynamics in the Southern labor force due to the discontinuation of unfree labor.
