Marie-Amable Foretier (1778-1854) was a philanthropist in Lower Canada. She was the daughter of Thérèse Legrand and Pierre Foretier, and the eleventh child of their family of fourteen. The family was well-off, with a large house, including a well-stocked library. Her father was a businessman and a landowner in the seigneurial system. Her mother had brought the family home into the marriage, ceded by her parents. At age 30, Foretier married Denis-Benjamin Viger, a lawyer in Montreal and member of
