A veteran of the Pancho Villa Expedition, World War I and World War II, he attained the rank of brigadier general and was a recipient of the Silver Star and two awards of the Legion of Merit. Bell was most notable for his service as assistant division commander of the 81st Infantry Division during the Second World War and his post-war command of the 10th Mountain Division.
