Alstroemeria is a South American genus belonging to the Alstroemeria family, composed of 124 species distributed from southern Venezuela to southern Argentina and Chile. The genus was named by Carl Linnaeus in honor of his friend, the Swedish botanist Clas Alströmer, who was the first to collect seeds of these species in South America and send them to Europe in 1753.
