Canadian fur trader François-Antoine Larocque’s expedition to Yellowstone River in 1805 is the first well-described journey from Upper Missouri River and westward to the Bighorn Mountains and the middle Yellowstone in present-day Montana. Larocque’s “Yellowstone Journal” provides a picture of the early fur trade with the Mandan and Hidatsa Indians in North Dakota. As he traveled with a Crow Indian camp on its way back home to the Yellowstone, Larocque described the various countrysides from the
