The nature reserve is part of the Schaalsee European Bird Reserve designated in 1992. It has an area of c. 86 hectares and incorporates part of the town of Zarrentin am Schaalsee in the local subdistricts (Germarkungen) of Boissow, Techin, Neuhof and Neuenki
