In Christian theology, kenosis is the "self-emptying" of Jesus. The word ἐκένωσεν (ekénōsen) is used in the Epistle to the Philippians: "[Jesus] made himself nothing" (NIV), or "[he] emptied himself" (NRSV), using the verb form κενόω (kenóō), meaning "to empty".
