text: José H. Leal is a Brazilian-born malacologist and American citizen residing in the United States since 1984. Between 1996 and 2013 he was the executive director of the Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum, in Sanibel Island, Florida, and he is currently the science director and curator of that museum. Dr. Leal received his Ph.D. in marine biology and fisheries from the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science, University of Miami. He was an assistant editor for Sea Frontiers Magazine
