Jonathan Richard Kirkpatrick was Dean of Dunedin from 1996 until 2001. He obtained an honours degree in theology from the University of London. He came to New Zealand in 1991 with his partner, Tim Barnett, to be vicar at St Michael and All Angels, Christchurch. Kirkpatrick is known for his gay-rights activism within the Anglican church. Kirkpatrick became Dean of St Paul's Cathedral in Dunedin in 1996. Barnett remained in Christchurch and was elected to parliament later that year as the Labour M
