text: John Congreve Murray was a Scottish first-class cricketer and British Army officer. The son of Patrick Murray, a solicitor, and his wife, Agnes Evelyn, he was born at Edinburgh in August 1882. He was educated at the Edinburgh Academy, where he played for the cricket XI. After completing his education, he became a stockbroker and was employed by Messrs Guild, Lawson and Murray. A member of the Grange Cricket Club, he was selected to play for Scotland in 1909, making his first-class debut against
