text: John David Guillory is an American literary critic best known for his book Cultural Capital (1993). He is the Julius Silver Professor of English at New York University. Guillory has focused his work on the history of rhetoric, the sociology of criticism, and early media studies, especially the work of I.A. Richards, Marshall McLuhan, and Walter Ong. In addition, he has written numerous essays exploring Renaissance figures as Spenser, Milton, Shakespeare, Marlowe, Bacon, and Hobbes, among others.
