John Edmund Savage is an American computer scientist and An Wang Professor Emeritus of Computer Science at Brown University. At his retirement in 2019, Savage was one of the longest-serving faculty members in Brown's history. Savage earned his Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1965, under the supervision of Irwin M. Jacobs. After leaving MIT, he worked briefly for Bell Laboratories before joining the Brown faculty in 1967. He is the author of the b
