James Chalmers was an Australian politician. He was a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1947 until 1956. He was a member of the Labor Party (ALP) until he resigned from the party in 1952 and then sat as an independent Labor member. Chalmers was born in Lanarkshire, Scotland. He was the son of a coal miner and migrated to Australia with his family at the age of seven. He was educated to elementary level and began work as a coal miner in the Hunter Region when he was 14.
