text: James Gribble was a British trade unionist and socialist activist. Gribble worked as a bootmaker from the age of twelve, following in his father's trade. He served in the British Army for eight years from 1885, then returned to bootmaking in Northampton. He became active in the National Union of Boot and Shoe Operatives (NUBSO), and also joined the Social Democratic Federation (SDF), and in 1897 launched a local SDF newspaper, the Pioneer.
