text: Georg Hermann Ivo Bruns was a German classical philologist. He was the son of legal scholar Karl Georg Bruns (1816–1880). He studied classical philology, philosophy and history in Berlin and Bonn, where his instructors included Franz Bücheler (1837–1908), Jacob Bernays (1824–1881) and Hermann Usener (1834–1905). Following graduation (1877), he conducted research on classical literature in Paris (1878–1880). After his return to Germany, he obtained his habilitation at the University of Göttingen,
