Isoproturon (IPU) is a urea class selective herbicide, which has been used to control annual grasses and many broad leafed weeds in wheat, barley, rye and triticale. Isoproturon was introduced in 1971 by Hoechst AG,, Rhône-Poulenc and Ciba-Geigy AG. It was once one of the most widely used herbicides in the world, however it has suffered various bans, notably in the USA in the late 1900s, and until 2016 was sold in 22 European countries.
