Hugh O'Neill, Baron Dungannon was an Irish soldier of noble ancestry. In early July 1608, O'Neill travelled to Ostia, a coastal town fifteen miles west of Rome, in order to "make holiday and take a change of air". He was accompanied by the 1st Earl of Tyrconnell, Cathbarr O'Donnell, and Vicar General of Killaloe Donal O’Carroll. Unfortunately, the men "all agreed that that particular place [was] one of the worst and most unhealthy for climate in all Italy". O'Neill died in Rome and was buried in
