The history of rail transport in Slovakia began in November 1836, at the founding meeting of the participating companies for the construction of a horse railway from Bratislava to Trnava. The first section of that railway was launched on 27 September 1840. The first locomotive powered railway in today's Slovakia was constructed by the Hungarian "Northern Railway Company" on the Bratislava–Marchegg–Gänserndorf (–Vienna) line, commissioned on 20 August 1848.
