text: Henry IV was Duke of Carinthia and Margrave of Verona from 1122 until his death. He was the first ruler of those territories from the Rhenish House of Sponheim. Henry was the eldest son of Count Engelbert I of Sponheim and his wife, Hedwig, probably a Friulian countess from Mossa. Engelbert had been a supporter of Pope Gregory VII in the fierce Investiture Controversy and therefore had been divested of his county in the Bavarian Puster Valley by Emperor Henry IV in 1091.
