Henry Howley, was a United Irish insurgent whose premature use of a weapon Robert Emmet was to blame for the failure of his plan in 1803 to seize Dublin Castle. Howley was a Protestant born Roscrea, County Tipperary. He became a United Irishman, committed, in defiance of the British Crown and of the Ascendancy's Irish Parliament, to an independent and democratic Irish republic. His part in the rebellion of 1798 is unclear, but he appears to have assisted the rebel acquisition of arms. In 1802 in
