Charles Henry Gifford FBA (1913–2003) was an English comparative literature scholar. Born in London on 17 June 1913, Gifford attended Harrow School before reading classics at Christ Church, Oxford. During the Spanish Civil War, he worked with his wife Rosamund to assist refugee children, and learnt Spanish as a result. He then served in the Royal Armoured Corps from 1940 to 1946, during which time he taught himself Russian. In 1946, he was appointed to an assistant lectureship at the University
