Harlan E. Boyles was a politician and public servant in North Carolina, who served as North Carolina State Treasurer from January 1977 to January 2001. Boyles grew up in Lincoln County, North Carolina, where his father farmed and owned a country store. As a boy, Boyles was afflicted with polio. He attended the University of Georgia and then transferred to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he earned an accounting degree in 1951.
