Born in St. Peters, Richmond County, Nova Scotia, the son of John and Elizabeth (Robertson), Kyte was educated in public schools in St. Peter's and St. Francis Xavier University. He taught school for four years and then studied law in the office of C. F. McIsaac, K.C., in Antigonish, Nova Scotia.
