George Scalise was the former president of the Building Service Employees International Union (BSEIU) who was convicted of racketeering due to the exposure of labor racketeering by newspaper columnist Westbrook Pegler, who won a Pulitzer Prize in 1941 for his reporting. The BSEIU was founded in 1921 in Chicago to represent janitors, elevator operators, and window washers. Membership increased significantly with a 1934 strike in New York City's Garment District.
