George Quarrie was a Manx poet active in the 1880s–1910s, best known for his poem, The Melliah. Quarrie was born at Ballavair, Kirk Bride, in around 1846, the eighth child of John Quarrie and Mary Hardie. By 1881 he was a General Commission Agent in Barrow-in-Furness, where he was married. It was when in England that Quarrie published The Melliah, initially in 1880 and then in 1883. The poem recalls in Manx dialect the traditional Manx process and celebration of collecting in the harvest. This p
