George Kaiser Sanderson was a career U.S. Army officer. Having enlisted as a Private he was later commissioned and twice breveted for gallant and meritorious service during the American Civil War. Sanderson was the first to erect a monument at the site of the Battle of the Little Bighorn, where the Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument currently stands.
