In classical Islamic literature the futūḥ were the early Arab-Muslim conquests of Egypt, Syria, Mesopotamia, etc. which facilitated the spread of Islam and Islamic civilization. Futūḥ is an Arabic word with the literal meaning of "openings", as in "liberation".
