The Esquilache Riots occurred in March 1766 during the rule of Charles III of Spain. They were directly sparked by a series of measures by Leopoldo de Gregorio, Marqués de Esquilache aiming to diminish the use of traditional apparel that made it easier to conceal weapons, but they also took into account growing discontent in Madrid over the rising costs of bread and other staples.
