text: Edward J. McGivern was an American labor union leader. Born in Boston, McGivern attended grammar school. In 1889, he became a plasterer, and he soon joined the Operative Plasterers' and Cement Masons' International Association. In 1908, he was elected as a business agent of his local union. He soon won election as vice-president of the union, then in 1912 became the union's president. McGivern suffered from rheumatism for many years. In 1929, he attended the conference of the Workers' Education
