"Du, du liegst mir im Herzen" is a German folk song about the excruciating pain of unrequited love, which is believed to have originated in northern Germany around 1820. Bavarian flautist Theobald Böhm, inventor of the fingering system for the modern western concert flute, composed a theme and variations for flute and piano on this tune, as well as a setting for soprano, tenor, and orchestra.
