Douglas Arthur James (1925–2018) served as the longest serving (1952–2016) professor at the University of Arkansas. Dr. James was known as "The Bird Man of Arkansas." As a boy in Michigan, he led field trips in elementary and junior high school. He attended the University of Michigan where he earned a master's degree in 1956 and followed by a master's degree in 1957 at the University of Illinois where he earned his Ph. D. In 1953, he became the first ornithologist from the Department of Zoology
