Daniel de Rémy de Courcelle, Sieur de Montigny, de La Fresnaye et de Courcelle was the Governor General of New France from 1665 to 1672. For many years the small settlements on the north shore of the St. Lawrence River had been the subject of frequent raids by the Mohawk, one of the five nations that comprised the Iroquois Confederacy.
