The name is an acronym of two predecessor companies, Compagnie Maritime d'Affrètement (CMA) and Compagnie Générale Maritime (CGM), translating as "Maritime Freighting Company" and "General Maritime Company", respectively. The company is headquartered at the CMA CGM Tower in Marseille, France, and is the third largest container shipping company in the world. The company's 2023 annual revenue was US$47 billion. CM
