text: Christian Georg Theodor Ruete was a German ophthalmologist born in Scharmbeck, Lower Saxony. In 1833 obtained his medical doctorate from the University of Göttingen, later serving as an assistant to Karl Gustav Himly (1772–1837). In 1841 he became an associate professor at Göttingen, receiving the title of "full professor" in 1847. Afterwards he was a professor of ophthalmology at the University of Leipzig from 1852 to 1867.
