Carl Voegtlin, also Karl Voegtlin, was a Swiss-American pharmacologist, organic chemist, and the first director of the U.S. National Cancer Institute. He is known for his research into the biochemical effects of cancer, contributions to the pharmacology of arsenicals and the discovery, with Homer Smith, of mapharsen as the active agent in Paul Ehrlich's Salvarsan.
