The then Edward Stanley, 18th Earl of Derby (1918–1994) presided over the ceremony. At the time of opening, the school's staff of 10 teachers looked after 222 pupils. The school's motto E Pluribus Unum, which is also the motto of the United States, was thought to be appropriate
