It is situated approximately 7 miles (11 km) west of Hornsea and 9 miles (14 km) north-east of the market town of Beverley. The civil parish is formed by the village of Brandesburton and the hamlets of Burshill and Hempholme. According to the 2011 UK census, Brandesburton parish had a population of 1,522, an increase on the 2001 UK census figure of 1,348. St Mary's Church, which is surrounded by its churchyard
