Leipzig is divided into ten boroughs or districts (Stadtbezirke). The boroughs are further divided into localities (Ortsteile). The administrative division of Leipzig has been formed over the centuries since the town charter from 1156/70. From 1939 onwards with the formation of the district of Leipzig, many neighbouring municipalities were incorporated into the city of Leipzig to form a city of localities (Stadtteil).
