Robert Cornelius Mitchell was an American professional football halfback and wide receiver. He played college football for the Illinois Fighting Illini and professionally in the National Football League (NFL) for the Cleveland Browns and Washington Redskins. He was the first black player to play for the Redskins, who were the last NFL team to racially integrate. Mitchell joined the Redskins' scouting department following his playing career in 1969 and was named assistant general manager in 1981,
