Benito Monción Duran was a Dominican revolutionary and a prominent leader in the Dominican Restoration War. At an early age, he moved with his mother to the border community of La Visite, Dajabón. Despite his limited education, he was characterized by possessing a natural intelligence. He worked as a day laborer for the merchant Santiago Rodríguez Masago. Because he lived near the border, he was one of the first Dominicans to face the Haitian invasions. In 1845, he received the rank of Sergeant
