Australian rules football was first played in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) in 1911. A competition, known as AFL Canberra, has existed since 1924 and the code is governed by that organsation. It is the second most participated football code with more than 8,000 registered players. The ACT was one the first official bidder in 1981 to join a national Australian rules football competition.
