Arthur Biedl was a Hungarian pathologist born in what today is Comloșu Mic, Romania. He studied medicine at the University of Vienna, and from 1893 served as an assistant to Salomon Stricker (1834-1898), Philipp Knoll (1841-1900), and Richard Paltauf (1858-1924) at the institute of experimental pathology in Vienna. In 1899 he became an associate professor, followed by a full professorship in 1902. In 1898, Biedl and colleague R. Kraus demonstrated that "bile salts," when injected into the bloods
