text: Argyll, sometimes called Argyllshire, is a historic county and registration county of western Scotland. Now replaced by the Argyll and Bute area, with the Argyll and Bute Council now the Local authority, since the implimentation of the Local Government etc. (Scotland) Act 1994, on the 1 April 1996. Argyll is of ancient origin, and broadly corresponds to the ancient kingdom of Dál Riata less the parts which were in Ireland.
