He was responsible for rebuilding the College of the Holy Cross, of which he was president three times, after it was destroyed by fire and rescuing it from financial ruin and pressure to close it by the Jesuits superiors. Born in Rome, Ciampi was educated at the Roman College before volunteering in 1840 as a missionary to the United States. He studied and was ordained at Georgetown University before
