Alois Lutz (1898–1918) was an Austrian figure skater credited with inventing the Lutz jump. Lutz was born into a poor family in Hernals and worked as a mechanic's assistant after he finished school. This was an unusual background for figure skaters at the time, as it was an expensive sport. He was able to afford to skate due to his talent being discovered by Eduard Engelmann Jr., who financially supported his training. Beginning in 1912, Lutz began to compete in club competitions.
