text: Alfred Braunthal was an Austrian trade unionist and social scientist. Born in Vienna to a Jewish family, Alfred was the younger brother of Julius and Bertha Braunthal, who both later became prominent in the workers' movement. Alfred studied philosophy, history and economics in Vienna and Berlin, receiving a doctorate in 1920. In 1921, he became working for the Leipziger Volkszeitung newspaper, writing about finance, and also teaching at the Tinz Heimvolkshochschule. From 1925 until 1928, he was
