Aleksandr Vasilyevich Gladkov was a Soviet Army major general and a Hero of the Soviet Union. A veteran of World War I and the Russian Civil War, Gladkov rose to regimental commander in the cavalry of the interwar Red Army, but was imprisoned during the Great Purge. He was freed and returned to regimental command before the war broke out. Gladkov rose to divisional command, leading the 112th Motor Rifle Division, destroyed during Operation Typhoon.
