Adriaan Cornelis Valentin van Bemmel was a Dutch zoologist, conservationist and patron of the Natural History Museum Rotterdam and director of the Blijdorp zoo. Van Bemmel was born in Beverwijk where he received his early education. He then studied biology at the University of Amsterday, receiving a master's degree in 1937. He became a zoologist at the museum in Buitenzorg in Dutch Java and was held prisoner of war in 1941 by the Japanese. The returned to the Netherlands in 1951 and received a d
