The 1882 New York gubernatorial election was held on November 7, 1882. Republican incumbent Alonzo B. Cornell ran for re-election to a second term in office, but was defeated for the Republican nomination by Charles J. Folger, the Secretary of the Treasury under President Chester A. Arthur. Folger's nomination was a victory for President Arthur and the Stalwart faction of the state party, but he was badly defeated in the general election by the mayor of Buffalo, Grover Cleveland.
