text: The 1780 Massachusetts gubernatorial election was held in September 1780 to elect the governor of Massachusetts. It was the first gubernatorial election following the adoption of the Massachusetts Constitution. Prior to the election, the Massachusetts Governor's Council administered the government following the removal of the last royal governor during the American Revolution. John Hancock was overwhelmingly selected by the voting public, defeating James Bowdoin.
